Welcome!

It all starts with the welcome as you arrive where the smiles are genuine and the staff eager to help with check-in, luggage and any other questions you may have.

We love the smaller boutique style hotels like the Indigo and the Prestige in Penang as another example.

They feel more homely, cosy and personal. We love the modern decor of the lobby and floors at the Indigo. Exuding steampunk vibes with black piping and black and white tiles, it combines effortlessly with traditional accents in the furniture and artwork.

Location

The location is good and you could say it is on the north-eastern boundary of District 1 so not directly in the centre but close enough to walk or a short Grab ride away.

It is a block away from Japan Town so no surprise there are many Japanese restaurants in this neighbourhood. Japan Town is a lively experience in itself so be prepared for that!

Overall the location presented no issues for us and Grabs were easy to book and attended quickly.

Ground Floor

As you enter you are greeted by the doorman and staff who are manning the three marble reception desks to the left.

Beyond them is a lounge/waiting area with couches and armchairs bathing in the sunlight from the floor to ceiling glass windows.

We just love the decor of the black marble with gold trim and brown and dark blue accents throughout the property. Small embellishments like a wooden glass cabinet or the tower of old chest suitcases placed in the corner behind reception only add to the charm and warmth.

As you turn right there are 3 lifts on your left and a dining/event space on your right. On our visit, this was used for an art exhibition by a local artist and we love the way they support local causes and hold regular events here.

Further on you reach the stylish Shipyard Bar where you can relax pre or post sightseeing with a local Saigon beer or maybe a cocktail during Happy Hour? Bar snacks available too of course.

There is access to a narrow outside area with a few tables and chairs where smokers can find relief.

Rooms

The rooms are stylish and tasteful and we had no complaints during our stay. We stayed in both a standard room and a suite. The beds were super comfortable and the shower pressure excellent in both.

The rooms were spotless and cleaned daily. Different types of pillows are available on request. Mini bar had free soft drinks but alcohol and sweets were chargeable.

Standard rooms came with a chaise lounge and table whilst a suite definitely takes things up a few notches with a separate bathroom and wardrobe area for clothes and accessories plus large mirrors and double basins in the bathroom. Simply adore the feature walls behind the beds which feature a fun cartoon depiction of the local neighbourhood.

Dining

The Shipyard Upper Deck restaurant is as the name suggests up the stairs on the Mezzanine floor and serves as breakfast room and restaurant for lunch and dinner.

Thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to breakfast every morning and the staff were superb.

Everything is there including Vietnamese staples of Pho plus lots of western options. What really impressed us is how diners are given a short menu of three Vietnamese dishes to try which they rotate daily. What an amazing idea especially if it is your first time in Vietnam.

You sample a dish like Bun Thit Nuong or Bun Thai and you can get a accustomed with the cuisine before venturing out into the big city. And hey, don’t forget to enjoy a refreshing coconut with your breakfast too!

We also tried room service and the prices were reasonable and the quality good.

Amenities

The rooftop affords guests stunning 270 degree views of the city and also houses the pool and gym.
Now I’ve never seen the point of gyms on holidays but the pool is definitely a welcome sight in the heat that Saigon!
It was frequented daily and usually we were the only ones present, so it was relaxing as well.

Staff
And saving the best for last, the staff were amazing. The younger crew were always smiling and eager to speak English. Attention to detail was excellent and management were there to help with any and all matters. Lastly, the doorman/porter was always friendly and had ideas on the best places to go!
