Montenegro’s Identity and Top Reasons to Visit Montenegro

TOTAL AWE

For the first time visitor, Montenegro can seem like an endless stream of “wows”! In particular the views of the bay as you come down from the mountain tops is amazing. But inland has more breathtaking moments around every corner as well. Welcome to Montenegro and be prepared to be “wowed”!

CUISINE

Montenegro’s coast is a haven for seafood lovers. They say the holy trinity in Montenegro is fish-wine-olives. You can try a myriad of different fish dishes like smoked carp and grilled eel. In the highlands try excellent cheese and prosciutto in traditional villages. Of course meat is also popular and Balkan grills abound. Whatever you try must be washed down with local vino Vranac.

LIFE’S A BEACH

The coast of Montenegro is spectacular. Especially where the steep mountains slope down to kiss the bay of Kotor. This leaves a lasting impression with everyone who visits. Apart from sunbathing on numerous beaches with crystal clear waters, the action heats up at night as Montenegro is becoming well-known for their beach parties at locations like Jaz beach. Enjoy.

MULTI-ETHNICITY

Commonly referred to as a multi-confessional nation, Montenegro sits on the border of lines that divided Orthodox Christanity and Catholicism. Throw in Islam from countless Ottoman raids and you have a meting pot of different religions and different ethnic groups all living in harmony.

HISTORY

Like many places, Montenegro has a long and variable history. Over the years many battles have seen different powers in residence. Modern Montenegro was built by Peter I, Peter II, Danilo and Nikola. Peter II in particular is revered as a great leader who was loved by everyone and his mausoleum on top of Lovcen is a must-visit.

ROCK

Montenegro has a very rocky and mountainous terrain which can be spectacular but has left the country with very little arable land for agriculture. Legend says that God throw a bag of rocks over the area of Montenegro and then sprinkled a fistful of dirt over it as an afterthought. Prepare to be “rocked”!

NATIONAL PARKS

One popular reason to visit Montenegro is for its beautiful national parks. Durmitor has Europe’s deepest canyon plus stunning lakes and scenery. You will also enjoy Biogradska for flora and fauna. Skadar is a paradise for birdlovers and enjoy Lovcen for traditional cuisine and culture. Amazing.
